Sierra mountains mushroom foray.  This guided foray will show you where and when to look for "burn morel" mushrooms (Morchella sp.) which can be prolific in conifer forest areas during the Spring after a fire.  Experienced foray leaders will guide the group to pre-scouted locations in the Sierra's to forage for these delicious mushrooms.

What you will learn:
  • Habitat for burn morels
  • Indicator plants and fungi that typically signal morels are nearby
  • Identifying look-alike's that are NOT morels
  • Proper cooking instructions (Don't eat raw morels!)
  • Storage and dehydration tips

Meeting details will be emailed to you when you sign up, but we start in the Pollock Pines area at 10am.  From there, the foray leader(s) will take the group(s) to various locations in the El Dorado National Forest.  Be prepared for moderate hiking, cool weather, and possible rain.  And bring a mushroom basket!

We cannot guarantee you'll find mushrooms, but we give you all the information you need to find them.

We also highly recommend downloading a GPS app on your phone like GAIA or AllTrails to track your location in the forest, so you don't get lost or turned around.  Other useful apps like iNaturalist can help you identify other edible or non-edible mushrooms and plants you may find.
